Mission CISD’s Leo Marcell Elementary Marks 70 Years of Educational Excellence

MISSION, TX (January. 12, 2024) – An atmosphere of joy and pride enveloped Mission CISD’s Leo Marcell Elementary Cafeteria as students, faculty, staff, and alumni came together to commemorate the school's remarkable 70-year journey. 

Established in 1953 and named after Leo Marcell, who served as Mission CISD's business manager for over twenty-six years, the school witnessed unprecedented growth during his tenure.

Leo Marcell Elementary Vice Principal, Velma Flores opened the program.

“It is with pride and gratitude that we celebrate Leo Marcell Elementary past, present and future – each student that walks through our door is part of this legacy,” Flores said.

Dr. Carol G. Perez, Superintendent of Schools at MCISD, highlighted the significance of the milestone, drawing a parallel to olden days.

“You know long ago, 70 years represented a lifetime, symbolizing not only longevity but wisdom. Leo Marcell Elementary embodies this wisdom, with teachers dedicating a lifetime to providing expertise and inspiration,” Dr. Perez said.

The celebration featured guest speaker and alumni, Rogelio Cervantes, a disabled veteran and nationally awarded children’s book author. Cervantes shared words of encouragement, emphasizing resilience in the face of life's challenges.

“It’s an honor to be here today and I want the students to understand that life may throw obstacles your way, but it's through resilience that you achieve the desired results. Leo Marcell Elementary exemplifies this spirit,” Cervantes said.

The program showcased performances by the Leo Marcell Choir and Leo Marcell Drumline. Adding to the festivities were presentations by Mission High School's drill team, drumline, cheerleaders, and rock band.

Marcell Elementary Student Council President, Allison Rodriguez concluded the evening by reflecting on Leo Marcell Elementary's humble beginnings.

 “When Marcell School opened its doors in December 1953, it was comprised of 15 classrooms serving grades one through sixth, with 14 teachers and approximately 275 students,” Rodriguez said.

“Today, our school proudly boasts an enrollment of over 400 students, with 25 classrooms, a learning resource center, special education, music, and technology programs. Leo Marcell Elementary continues to be a beacon of educational excellence, shaping the future of generations to come. Here's to the next 70 years!”
